Blonde Hair in Bangkok: Why It Goes Brassy and How We Prevent It

Blonde is the hardest colour to keep looking right in Bangkok, and we would rather say that upfront than let you find out in week three.

The problem is not the work done in the salon. It is what happens afterwards. Lightening removes your natural pigment and replaces it with a toner, and toner is the first thing the sun takes back. The UV index here stays high nearly all year, so the cool tones lift out and the warm base underneath starts showing through. That is what people mean when they say their blonde has gone brassy. It is not a mistake. It is chemistry, and it happens faster in this climate than almost anywhere else.

What we do about it

Two things make the difference. The first is not lifting too far in one appointment. Hair that has been pushed several levels lighter in a single sitting is porous, and porous hair loses tone faster and breaks more easily. Going in stages costs more appointments but leaves you with hair that actually holds colour.

The second is protecting the fibre while we lighten. We use a bond-protecting treatment alongside the lightener, which works during the process to keep the internal structure of the hair intact rather than repairing it afterwards. On heavily lightened hair this is the difference between blonde that looks healthy and blonde that looks like straw by the second month.

What to expect afterwards

Blonde needs toning between full appointments. That is simply how it works here, and anyone who promises you low-maintenance blonde in a tropical climate is not telling you the truth.

Highlights and balayage are lower maintenance than full blonde, because your natural base is still present and there is no hard regrowth line to manage. If you want to be blonde but do not want to be in the salon constantly, that is the honest recommendation.

If your hair is already damaged from previous lightening, repairing the fibre before we add more lift is usually the right sequence. The options and prices are on our keratin treatment Bangkok page.
